So often people look for a companion in a dog to safely sooth their desire to be loved and love unconditionally; to mirror back from their gentle souls what we seek innately from our human companions without all the complications. Rocky was just that for me. I adopted him from the Houston SPCA at a time in my life when all I wanted was to be loved unconditionally even with all my flaws and emotional baggage. From the moment I looked into his hopeful eyes, I knew there was 100% acceptance and zero judgment. If people could love that way, the possibilities would be infinite. As our family grew and we moved from one state to another, so did the memories. SO MANY MEMORIES. What makes the passing of your beloved family member difficult, isn’t the actual passing, but the memories they take with them. When you come to reflect on their time here on Earth, you can pinpoint a particular event in your life–much like a cherished song–and remember precisely (down to a distinct smell) what life was like at that juncture in your life, except now the memory seems hollow because they are no longer with us. Rocky for me represents resilience, heart, hope, fearlessness, and an exuberance for life that every human being and furry creature should exhibit while given the opportunity on this beautiful rollercoaster we call LIFE.

Be sure to show Rocky’s family some love in the comments below. Thank you for reading his story.
