As I was sitting at my computer desk, trying to come up with something clever and witty for this month’s blog circle with images featuring the color yellow, I was visited by a familiar face. He is yellow and squeaky with a bright orange beak. Oh, and he loves bathtime.

He is a duck and Emily is obsessed with them. I don’t quite know why other than that they make her smile. Her collection is quite large; some are wearing costumes of sorts and some are just your run-of-the-mill yellow, squeaky, bath toy. It became quite clear what this blog post would be about when Emily came up to me as I sat editing photos and said, “Your desk is boring and doesn’t have any color. Here. Have a duck,” as she placed him on my desk.

Currently he sits on the top of my computer screen and I appreciate his effort to brighten up my day.

Perhaps the color is what draws her to them. She is always a cheerful, spririted little girl and yellow really does suit her. And today, it was as if she knew my project for this month was about her! I happened upon her working on one of her many crafts (oh my, does this girl LOVE crafts!) and found that she had created what I thought was just a circle…but turned out to be a hat.

Cutting was a skill she practiced a lot in pre-k last year and I think it may just have been her favorite. Yes, there were ABC’s and 123’s to be learned but Emily with her natural desire to create with her skillful little hands, found great joy in learning to cut and paste and create works of art. From little round bodies with 2 legs and 2 arms and smiles on their faces, to rainbows of every color, to flowers, and a final signature of an E-m-i-l-y with a backwards y…pure joy abounds while her hands are crafting and her creativity runs wild.
